The U.S. FDA approved bosentan on 20th of Nov 2001. Bosentan is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

Bosentan blocks the binding of endothelin to its receptors, which is involved in the constriction of the pulmonary blood vessels and is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension by expanding the blood vessels.

Warnings

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to bosentan or any of the ingredients present in them. Inform your doctor if you have any history of liver problems, psoriasis, or hypoglycemia (low blood pressure). 

Precautions

Inform your doctor about your prescribed and non-prescribed medicine and take a proper diet while under medication. It will be helpful for him to treat you based on your previous medical history or make some dose adjustments. It is not recommended for pediatric patients with systemic sclerosis and ulcer disease. It may affect the fertility of the male individual and foetus of the pregnant female individual. So, consult your doctor if you are planning to get pregnant or think you may be pregnant while breastfeeding.

Side Effects

The common side effects that are experienced while you are on the treatment are Bosentan headache, oedema, respiratory tract infection, inflamed nose passage, joint pain, irregular heartbeats, diarrhoea and low blood pressure. Report your doctor immediately, if you experience abnormal liver function, anaemia, allergic reaction (skin inflammation, itching and rash).

Your doctor will advise you to check the blood pressure and hemoglobin level because bosentan may cause low blood pressure and anemia as a side effect. Inform your doctor if you have a liver problem, are pregnant women planning to get pregnant, or think you may be pregnant before taking the medicine. It may be contraindicated to liver patients or pregnant women. Speak with your doctor about your medical history before going to start the medicine.
